Immanuel Lutheran Church and School can trace its origin in Washington to 1862. The school is beginning its 134th year. In 1863 the Evangelical Immanuel Lutheran Church was dedicated and a Christian Day School was established. A house on Jefferson Street (in Washington about six blocks from its present location) was first rented. The upper story served as the pastor's dwelling and the first floor served as the school. There were fifteen (15) students enrolled that first year.
A new school building was erected in 1939. That building continues to serve as the upper grade classroom complex. In 1958 a Kindergarten was started in a house west of the present church. A major addition connected to the existing school building was added to the south in 1960 which included a cafeteria, gymnasium, kindergarten classroom, and two (2) offices. An early childhood education program for four-year olds began in 1975. In 1997 a massive expansion of the school and church complex occurred and a three-year old preschool program and Extended Student Care (ESC) began. An elevator was added and the entire complex was made handicap accessible. The expansion included seven additional classrooms, restrooms, an office complex, and the movement of the library/computer center to the old kindergarten classroom. A church narthex was added to connect the school to the church.
The school has grown in enrollment so that in 1994 the class entering the first grade was large enough to need its own classroom. This class is expected to be the first of many to complete its education without sharing a teacher with another grade.
The current school enrollment was 240 on opening day.
